Overview
The Asufü Christian Institute (ACI) inherited its name from the birthplace of Christianity in the region. The word ‘Asufü’ means ‘a migrated place’. The history of Asufü dates back to early 20th Century, when the first believers of Christian faith from Punanamei village, namely; Mikrü Lohrü, Kholi Puni, and Hrüpuni Ashükho, were driven out from their village because of their beliefs. These acolytes of the faith migrated to the place where ACI Stands today. Since then, the place came to be known as Asufü, signifying the refuge where the first seed of Christianity in the region took root. Later, the then village Deputy-Chief, Kahre Mathibo, who was also well known for his deep and shrewd knowledge of customary laws and practices, entreated them to return to the village on the condition that they would conform to the seven (7) main traditional genas observed by the community. Subsequently, the three emerged as pioneer evangelists who preached the Gospel of Christ among the Mao, Poumai, Maram and parts of Zeme communities in Senapati District. Along with Christian faith, modern education was brought to the region.
