The Malabar region, particularly Malappuram District of Kerala, was once known for its educational backwardness. Ever since its inception, the University of Calicut has been at the forefront of initiatives aimed at uplifting this part of the state. Over the years, the University has consistently strived to bring quality education closer to the masses through outreach services and the establishment of study centres.

The Calicut University Teacher Education Centre, Manjeri, was established in 1992 as part of this mission. It was started under the University’s cost-based scheme to offer B.Ed. programmes, responding to the public demand for more opportunities in the field of teacher education at a time when very few B.Ed. colleges existed in the region.

Initially, the Centre functioned in a rented building with limited facilities. In 2004, it was shifted to the premises of a Government School at Chengara, Manjeri, making use of the school’s infrastructure with the permission of the Government of Kerala.
