About Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha

Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha is a government institution in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, established in 1918. Campusbells lists it under Humanities, with courses including M.A and BA.

The Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha - DBHPS Chennai was founded in 1918 by our dear father of the country Mahatma Gandhi with the express purpose of promoting Hindi in southern states. Devadoss Gandhi, the son of Mahatma Gandhi, was the first Pracharak. ’ Hindi Prachar ’ was a movement that evolved as part of the Freedom Movement, and the leaders who led the nation to ’FREE INDIA’ saw the need to make a single Indian language the National Language, and to unify the people via that language, hence intensifying National Integration.

1927 saw the emergence of Dakshina Bharat Hindi Prachar Sabha as an independent organization and Mahatma Gandhi was its President till he breathed his last. Gandhiji desired that the ’Hindi Prachar’ in the south should be carried on by involving the local people of the respective area. Till 1920, this Sabha had its office at George Town in Madras and after some years shifted to Mylapore and from thereafter to Triplicane where it functioned till 1936.

Provincial Branches were founded in 1936 to strengthen the movement, and the Sabha moved into the then-new town of Thyagaraya Nagar in Madras on a vast 7-acre plot of land the same year. Janab Abdul Hameed Khan laid the foundation for the structure, and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, President of the Indian National Congress at the time, proclaimed it open on October 7, 1936.
