Overview
Delhi School of Economics is known as one of the best higher education schools in India. V.K.R.V. Rao established this institution in 1949 with Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru`s assistance. It is based on the belief that a newly independent country striving for social and economic growth requires a vibrant and advanced social science research center. Many notable researchers, policymakers, educators, business executives, administrators, and journalists have come from the Department of Economics and its sibling departments of Geography and Sociology. Amartya Sen, a Nobel Laureate, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, and Suhamoy Chakravati, one of the founders of India`s late Five-Year Plan, have all taught here. The Ratan Tata Library is considered the best economics collection in the country, with more than 1.80,000 books, subscriptions to approximately 1.25,000 bound journals, and a large collection of publications from governments and international agencies. The department's computer laboratory is equipped with new computers and printers, high-speed Internet access, and advanced software such as STATA, GAUSS, EVIEWS and SCIENTIFIC WORKPLACE. Teachers and students can access electronic resources and databases such as JSTOR and ECONLIT. Two large conference rooms and several classrooms are equipped with the most advanced audio-visual equipment. Professional support staff are always available.
