The Distance Education Department- Punjabi University, Patiala was founded in 1968 and is considered a pioneer in the field of distance education. It is the country’s second institute to use a non-formal education model. This was India’s first department to use a regional language as a medium of instruction and assessment.
The department now oversees 34 multi-faculty programmes. In past years, the department’s student enrollment has ranged from twelve to fifteen thousand. The department is proud of its students, who have consistently scored very well in University tests, demonstrating the superiority of remote learning.
The Punjab Assembly established Punjabi University, Patiala under Punjab Act No. 35 of 1961. Dr.
S. Radhakrishnan, India’s then-President, laid the foundation stone for Punjabi University on June 24, 1962. "The institutes of higher education bear the responsibility of nation-building in a vitally essential way," he lectured.
Our goal is to build a strong, free, and democratic India in which every person has an equal chance to flourish. Our institutions bear a significant amount of responsibility in this endeavour. "Founded on April 30, 1962, in the then-princely state of Patiala with the primary goal of promoting the cause of Punjabi language, art, and literature, Punjabi University has since grown to become the state’s largest university."
The Hebrew University of Israel is the first university in the world to be named after a language. Its aim is to build and incorporate a university for the growth of Punjabi studies and the development of the Punjabi language as a medium of teaching, as well as to provide instruction in humanistic and scientific topics and, more broadly, to promote education and research. Since 1965, the University has been operating from its current 316-acre, beautifully green, pollution-free campus.
The University’s authority area was initially limited to a 16-kilometer radius, with only nine colleges. In 1969, it was designated as an affiliating university, with 43 colleges affiliated with it. The institute presently serves nine Punjab areas’ educational requirements.
The University has evolved into a multi-faceted, multi-faculty educational institution committed to the promotion of higher education and research in the Humanities, Arts, Sciences, Engineering Languages, Technology, and a number of other disciplines since its foundation. Its 1500+ academics educate and mentor over 14,000 students in a multi-faceted, multi-pronged, and multi-faculty environment that comprises 70+ Teaching and Research Departments/Chairs on campus, 27 Regional Centres/Neighbourhood Campuses/Constituent Colleges, and 274 Colleges linked to it.
