Thiruthuraipoondi is a municipality situated in Tiruvarur district within the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is primarily an agricultural town located to the south of Thiruvarur district and is approximately 28 km away from the district headquarters in Thiruvarur. Previously, there existed a situation where economically disadvantaged and middle-class students residing in Thiruthuraipoondi and the surrounding rural areas had to travel long distances to pursue higher education.

In order to address this issue, Bharathidasan University initiated the establishment of a model college on July 18, 2011, offering five courses under the patronage of the former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Dr. J. Jayalalithaa.
