Overview

Government Centre of Legal Education was founded on 29th November 2021. But it has a very illustrious past. The only Government Law College in West Bengal was erstwhile known as Law Section, Hooghly Mohsin College. The College is till date situated in the campus of the famous Hooghly Mohsin College, Chinsurah. Hooghly Mohsin College was the pioneer in legal education in Asia and was the first college that started teaching Law . Legal education in West Bengal can be traced back to 1853 with the introduction of law course in New Hooghly College, now known as Hooghly Mohsin College. The College began its journey on 1st August 1836. Hazi Muhammad Mohsin used his wealth for charitable purposes, including this College. Initially, it was named the New Hooghly College. On its 100th Anniversary it became Hooghly Mohsin College. It became affiliated to the University of Calcutta since the latter's initiation in 1857. After the establishment of the University of Burdwan in 1960, the college became its constituent college.
