Overview

The British Raj created the Government College of Engineering and Leather Technology - GCELT on March 11th, 1919, immediately after World War I ended, making it one of our country`s first engineering institutions. The historical perspective has been explored in the History section of this website. The management of this Government Institute is handled by the Directorate of Technical Education West Bengal and the Department of Higher Education of the Government of West Bengal. The organisation has concentrated on teaching and research in Leather Technology, Footwear, and Leather Goods Manufacturing since its inception, as well as offering training and hosting seminars/workshops to disseminate knowledge to stakeholders. Since 2000, when this Institute began offering a B. Tech programme in Information Technology, the morphology of this college has gradually changed. Another B. Tech course in Computer Science and Engineering was offered in 2001. In 2005, we looked towards vertical development by launching the M. Tech programme in Leather Technology, keeping up with the horizontal expansion. The Government of West Bengal created 55 additional academic jobs in the Higher Education department as a result of this diversification. The AICTE has approved all academic UG and PG programmes, and this college is now affiliated with the West Bengal University of Technology. There is currently a rare mix of seasoned and young faculty members with academic qualifications that meet AICTE standards. About a third of the faculty members hold a PhD, while many more are now enrolled in PhD programmes and pursuing research actively. The academic environment is excellent, and the professors are student-friendly, honest, and committed. The whole teaching and learning process, as well as the growth strategy, is centred on the students. Many of the faculty members have been abroad to learn about the most cutting-edge technology. Many faculty members serve as examiners for PhD theses at various Indian universities, as well as expert members of state and federal government bodies.
