Overview
Government Polytechnic Nirsa, formerly known as Mining Institute, Dhanbad, was established in 1958 by the State Government to meet the growing demand for skilled technicians and supervisors in the mining and mineral industries. The institute was set up considering the industrial importance of the North Chhotanagpur Division, particularly Dhanbad, a region rich in coal and mineral resources and home to several coal companies and mining establishments. Due to its strategic location and strong connectivity, Dhanbad was selected as an ideal centre for technical education related to mining and allied sectors. Initially, the institute offered only one engineering branch – Mining Engineering, focusing on producing technically skilled manpower for the mining sector. With the expansion ofinfrastructure and industrial development, two additional diploma programmes—Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering—were introduced in 2006 after approval fromthe All India Council for Technical Education.
