Sri Gurikar Marimallappa was born in Chikkanayakanahalli of Tumkur District in 1818. He was born to Sri. Mallappa and Smt. Honnamma. As he was the first son in the family, he had to shoulder a lot of responsibility. He was handsome and well built. Music, literature and acting were in his very blood. When he was growing to be a talented boy, Mysore city which has been known as the birth place of culture, arts and education, attracted him towards it. Marimallappa left his native place at the age of eight and came to Mysore. He attracted the attention of the then Maharaja of Mysore, Sei Krishnaraja Wodeyar III, by his exceptional talent for acting and music, as also by his attractive physical appearance. He got a suitable job at the Mysore Palace.

Sri Marimallappa was very much impressed by the service, sacrifice and generosity of the Maharaja for his subjects. He having no children of his own, decided to establish an educational institution in the city of Mysore, as suggested by Sri Rangacharulu who was the controller of the palace at that time.
