Overview

Surat`s Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology was founded in 1961 by the Indian Parliament as a higher education engineering institute. The National Institute of Technology, Surat, is often known as NIT Surat or SVNIT. This REC was established in 1961 to provide technical education in the areas of civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering. Electronics engineering undergrad programmes were first offered in 1983-84, followed by computer engineering and production engineering undergrad programmes in 1988-89. Chemical Engineering was first offered as a UG programme in 1995-96. The Central Government has declared the Sardar Vallabhbhai Regional College of Engineering & Technology (SVREC), Surat to be the Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT), Surat with the status of "Deemed University" with effect from December 4, 2002, in the exercise of the powers conferred by Section 3 of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Act, 1956. With effect from August 15, 2007, the Institute has been designated as an "Institute of National Importance." In all of the above fields, the Institute now offers six UG programmes, nineteen PG programmes, and three M.Sc. five-year integrated programmes, including a doctorate degree.
