Pragjyotishpur Medical College and Hospital is located at Guwahati, the gateway to the North-east. Pragjyotishpur which means “city of eastern lights,” is the ancient name of present-day Guwahati. It was the capital of the “Kamrupa Kingdom” which finds mention in the various mythological texts including Mahabharata and Kalika Purana. Pragjyotishpur was also famous as the hub of Tantric Practices and is linked to the Famous Kamakhya Temple, a revered Shakti Peetha. Today, Guwahati retains its historical and spiritual significance while evolving into the largest city of North-East.

Guwahati faces significant urban health challenges due to rapid population growth, pollution, and infrastructure strain. While it has several government and private hospitals, affordability to quality healthcare remains uneven, especially in slums and suburban areas. Common health concerns include air and water pollution-related diseases, vector-borne illnesses like dengue, and a rising burden of lifestyle diseases such as diabetes and hypertension.
