He was elected twice-first in 1980 and then in 1985 to the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly from Raipur City constituency. He is a successful businessman and industrialist.

Shri Shaillendra Jain is a Chemical Engineer by qualification. He is the Secretary of Mahanadi Education Society. He is the driving force behind the establishment of Raipur Institute of Technology, Raipur, one of the oldest and leading Private Engineering College in the State.
