Salbari College was established on 14th of November in 1983 by the conscious educationists and guardians of the locality with mere public donations amidst the poor socio-economic conditions prevailing at that time. They took the bold step of starting the first ever higher educational institution in the area for the benefit of the aspiring students of poor families in the greater Salbari area. They named it 'Salbari College' with a view to establishing the name of Salbari in the educational map of Assam through its contribution to the educational field.

The college opened undergraduate courses under Gauhati University till 2022 and is currently under Bodoland University. Previously, the College was single stream (only Arts) educational institution. Besides the arts stream, the science stream was also added to the college in 2023 as an additional stream by the government of Assam.

A. Sc. for Four Year Undergraduate Program (FYUGP) under NEP 2020 were introduced in the 2023-24 Academic Session for the first time.
