Overview

Shivaji University Maharashtra (SUK) is named after Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the Great Maratha Warrior and founder of the Maratha Empire. The iuniversity was founded in 1962. Dr. Radhakrishnan, India`s then-President, inaugurated it on November 18, 1962. One of the primary reasons for the university`s establishment was to meet the regional needs of South Maharashtra. The University`s jurisdiction spans three districts: Kolhapur, Sangli, and Satara, with over 3,00,000 students enrolled in 280 associated institutions and recognised institutes. This Maharashtra area has a rich and diverse socio-cultural legacy. The city of Kolhapur had become a focal point of educational opportunities for all classes and communities of South-Western Maharashtra and northern parts of neighboring Karnataka at the turn of the century, thanks to the innovative and socially reformist leadership of Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj, the princely ruler of Kolhapur. This is also the home of Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil, who pioneered the `Earn and Learn` initiative to provide education to the public. The Shivaji University Act of 1962 established the University with the goals of making higher education opportunities available to rural youth and doing basic and applied research in the fields of science and humanities to promote regional growth and development.
