1. History of the Institution:- St. Joseph’s college is the co-educational institution located at Torpa, the head quarter of Torpa community development block, at the distance of 75 km. from Ranchi, Jharkhand. It was established on 16.08.1978 by the founder and Principal Dr. Rev. Fr. Joseph Minj who was later appointed as the first Bishop of Simdega Catholic Diocese. Khunti Catholic diocese is the legal Honor of the College.

46 Years ago poor rural families could not afford to send their children to the Cities for higher education. A college was considered a necessity for the development of the people particularly that of the Mundas. The people of the area repeatedly approached the Church authority with the urgent request for opening a college at Torpa. After much deliberation the college was started in a humble way with 72 students in an old building with a broken roof at Torpa parish Campus. In the first years classes were held only for the Intermediate course. In 1980, bachelor degree courses were also introduced.
