Overview
TNDALU - The Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University was founded by Act No.43 of 1997 of the State Legislature for the promotion and diffusion of knowledge in the field of law in learning, teaching, and research. The university was opened on September 20, 1997, by His Excellency Shri. K.R. Narayanan, former President of India, and classes began on October 3, 1997. The university`s name was inspired by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the architect of India`s Constitution. The university has received recognition from both the Bar Council of India (BCI) and the University Grants Commission (UGC) (Sec. 2f and 12b of the UGC Act.). The University`s members include the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), the Association of Common Wealth Universities (UK), and the Indian Institute of Public Administration (New Delhi). This school serves as a hub for the expansion of legal education in the state of Tamil Nadu. The institution is the country`s first full-fledged sui generis law school, and it is unlike any other law school. The University is the state`s first full-fledged law school, providing legal education exclusively through the University and its affiliated institutions, and it is the first of its type in the country and South Asia. The University of Tamil Nadu provides legal education on its campus as well as through eight affiliated institutions situated in Chennai, Madurai, Trichy, Coimbatore, Tirunelveli, Chengalpattu, Vellore, and Salem. The University`s School of Excellence in Law, which has been operating on its campus since 2002, is modelled after other National Law Schools in the country and provides three-year and five-year integrated undergraduate courses in law. The University features a Postgraduate and Research Centre that provides Master of Law Degree Courses in eight distinct specialities, a doctorate programme, and research in many fields of law.
