Overview

Vardhaman Mahaveer Open University - VMOU or earlier known as Kota Open University , was renamed by the Government of Rajasthan by Gazette notification on September 21, 2002. The university was founded in 1987 as Rajasthan`s first open learning institution. The notion of creating an open university in Rajasthan stems from the findings of the UGC Committee, which noted that "the distance system in Rajasthan is well established and has the potential of expanding into a full-fledged Open University" under the chairmanship of Late Prof. G. Rama Reddy. The VMOU (Vardhaman Mahaveer Open University) was formed by the merger of two correspondence courses institutes, namely the Institute of Correspondence Studies and Continuing Education in Jaipur and the (College of Correspondence Studies) in Udaipur, with the goal of strengthening and achieving proper coordination among the scattered vast distance education resources and providing uniform high-quality education to the people of the state. The main goal of VMOU is to give educational opportunities to a greater proportion of the population, especially disadvantaged groups such as SC/ST, persons living in rural and remote locations, women, and in-service personnel. According to the Act, the University is responsible for providing teaching and research in such disciplines of knowledge, technology, vocation, and profession as the university deems necessary or appropriate; To establish study programs for degrees, diplomas, certifications, or any other reason; Exams and the awarding of degrees, diplomas, certificates, and other academic awards; To define how the remote education system should be organized in order to organize academic programs; To form partnerships with other universities and institutes, particularly IGNOU, to create an interlocking structure in the field of distance education. Fellowships, scholarships, and prizes will be established and awarded. To create and sustain Regional Centers and Study Centers in the state as institutional instruments for remote education; To recognize tests, studies, and activities carried out by other universities, institutions, academic bodies, and organizations; to carry out all functions required and incidental to the University`s goals and objectives.
